The Sweeping Process

CHIMNEY SWEEPING
  • Once you have booked an appointment, I will arrive within the hour slot that you have booked for.

  • I carry out a visual chimney stack inspection before I start, looking for any defects and analysing the structure of the chimney.

  • I will carry out an internal inspection of the appliance/fire, lay my dust sheets to prevent any mess,  and advise you on my course of action.

  • The whole process should take about 45 minutes to an hour and a half(sometimes this can take longer depending on how much cleaning is required).

  • I will gather the necessary equipment(rods/brushes/ vacuum cleaner) for the job depending on the sweep type.

  • My tools and equipment will remain on the sheets, ensuring that the area is kept clean.

  • A variety of techniques are available to chimney sweeps, with the vast majority of chimneys being sweepable from the ground upward around 99% of the time.

  • During the sweep, I'll be equipped with gloves and a mask to ensure my own protection and safety.

  • After sealing off the area to contain any soot, I'll proceed with sweeping using an industrial HEPA vacuum cleaner that will run continuously to ensure no soot particles escape. The vacuum cleaner is crucial for the sweep, so please inform me if the noise might pose an issue before booking.

  • I will guide my rods up the chimney until my brush exits the top of your chimney.

  • I'll thoroughly  sweep the chimney as I descend, capturing any soot within the sealed opening as it descends.

  • Once the rods and brushes are out, I will then begin to tidy up.

  • For those with a wood burner (log burner), multi-fuel stove, AGA, or Rayburn appliance, I'll initiate a smoke test to ensure there are no leaks. This involves heating up the stove and flue to create a draft, then introducing a smoke pellet into the stove with the doors closed. I'll inspect for any visible smoke leaks and ensure that when both upper and lower vents are open, the smoke circulates and exits up the flue.

  • Once this has been completed & everything is seen to be safe you will then be issued a sweep completion certificate of the Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps.
